Romance, Suspense and History

I love my job!

Can I just say that? I love writing novels. It’s work, hard work. More than I could ever have imagined. But at the end of the day, would I really want to do anything else?

This week, I finished the manuscript for the 4th book in my MOUNTAIN COVE series for Love Inspired Suspense. I loved writing the story—the adventure, the suspense and the mystery. For this story, I had a lot of historical research. Yes, it’s still a contemporary romantic suspense, but the story involves a shipwreck filled with legendary gold.

SS_Islander

S.S. Islander ( public domain)

I’ve always been fascinated by shipwrecks and would love to write more books—more great escapes—exploring the many possibilities.
But for this particular story—due out in October—I found a gold rush era shipwreck in the Inside Passage of Alaska, where I’ve set my Mountain Cove series. The S.S. Islander sank in 1901, killing 40 passengers, and taking with it gold bullion worth millions, even then. Did you know they are still trying to get to that gold? Trying to find it? What fun I had with this one in my story. Of course, the shipwreck in my story is all fictional, but based on the S.S. Islander.

Many attempts have been made to recover the gold over the last century. Imagine how much the technology has changed, and still the gold has remained just out of our grasp. At least at the writing of this post.

After this, I thought how much fun it would be to write my romantic suspense and include a little history in each story. I’m might try to do that as often as possible on my novels from this point on. What do you think?

I’ve always loved reading historical novels, historical romance or otherwise, so it makes sense that I would enjoy seasoning my romantic suspense with history.

Which do you prefer–historical novels? Historical romance? Contemporary or romantic suspense?

I invite you to join the Mountain Cove adventure with BURIED, my Love Inspire Suspense January release, and book 1 in the series.BURIED cover

Many blessings!

DEAR HANNAH–Advice to the Lovelorn by Hannah Alexander

Sunset Nov 99 35 E Palmdale 02

Dear Hannah,

I’m a physician connected to the military. I can get called out for active duty at any time, and my employer knows about it. I made a huge mistake this year when I neglected to tell the lady I’ve been dating about my “other job.” When I did get called out for several months, she was furious with me. Now that I’m back at work she’s no longer interested in seeing me. I didn’t intentionally hide my military background from her, I simply choose not to talk about it when I’m working my civilian job. I try not to even think about it. But she told me last night that she promised herself years ago never to fall in love with a man with a dangerous job. I don’t want to lose her, but I did tell her I thought she was being shortsighted, which led to a fight. Safer isn’t always better, right? How do I keep from losing her?

Ian

Dear Ian,

I don’t think insulting her is the way to go about healing the breach between you. Has she given you any other concrete reason for her fears? I believe most women are drawn to heroes, but obviously she has a problem with your heroism. I’d want to find out why. Have you discussed this with her in depth without belittling her fear? A woman needs to be treasured and understood. Fighting her like this  will only drive her away. It seems to me that both of you have been holding back. That’s no way to build a lasting relationship. I suggest you both pull down a few walls and learn to communicate better, or you’ll both have trouble with relationships down the road.

New Year’s Reading Resolutions by Camy Tang

Happy New Year!! One thing I love about the new year is setting my goals for the coming year. That usually involved work-related goals, but the past few years I’ve also been including reading goals.

I used to think reading goals weren’t important, but this past year especially I’ve been seeing how my fiction reading has helped me. Obviously it helps my writing by keeping me up to date with other novels published in the book market, and it also helps refill my creative well.

But even outside of my writing, my reading helps me on a deeply personal level. God often uses fiction to draw me closer to Him. Sometimes a story can speak to a specific issue I’m dealing with or can touch me in a new way. Reading also relaxes me like a little oasis in my day, a time just for me and not anyone else. It makes me feel better equipped to handle the other stresses in my day.

So I’ve put more emphasis on my fiction reading resolutions and make it as important as my work-related and health-related resolutions.

For me, I’ve entered a few reading challenges on Goodreads. I hope to read about 50 books from my Kindle this coming year and 50 books from my physical TBR pile … which won’t really make a huge dent in it, alas. For fun I calculated how high my physical TBR pile would be if I stacked them on top of each other and found out my TBR pile would be at least 50 feet high!!!!

How about you? What are your reading resolutions?

A GIFT TO YOU THIS CHRISTMAS by Hannah Alexander

Hallowed Halls 2000

I’m skipping the advice for the lovelorn for the remainder of the year–since this is my final post for the year. Today I’d like to give you a gift that will take very little effort to receive. It’s a book, of course. I happen to have several dozen giveaway copies of Hallowed Halls, the first novel in my Hallowed Halls Series. I’d love to share them with you if you enjoy reading Christian romance set in a small town with a medical theme. Let me describe this novel in more detail:

When Dr. Joy Gilbert is fired from a lucrative position in the city, she returns to her hometown along the Missouri River to find her former fiance, Zack, still single; her once vivacious mother, Molly, struggling financially and physically; and Tressa, the 15-year-old daughter of the boss who just fired Joy, popping out the back door of Joy’s SUV.

Tressa refuses to return to the city, where her divorced parents continue to battle in the aftermath of her brother’s unexplained death. Though the girl’s rebellion threatens Joy’s career, that threat means nothing when it appears Tressa’s life, as well, could be in danger.

Will Joy and Zack be able to work together again in time to safe Tressa’s life?

After more than thirty novels with traditional publishing, this is my first offering from Hannah Alexander Books, and it’s been a story on my heart for several years.

All you need to do to receive this book in the mail is contact me at askhannah@hannahalexander.com and mention this blog and give me your mailing address. I promise you will receive nothing more unless you sign up to receive notice whenever I have a new novel released. I will never share your address with others. If you enjoy the novel, I would love it, of course, if you wish to write a quick review, but I know how busy life gets sometimes, and word of mouth is just great. Tell your friends about a book you read, or share the book with others. I’ll be sending these free copies as long as I have any left, so give yourself a gift for Christmas. You may also read more about other books the Hannah Alexander husband-wife writing team has written at http://www.HannahAlexander.com

Merry Christmas, and may the next year bring you closer to Christ than ever before.

With Love,

Joyeux Noel

WP_20141218_003Last Christmas was the first my mother spent in heaven. There was a brutal kind of loss that overshadowed so much for me. Between then and now, we sorted through and sold her house. While an arduous and tearful a process, it was also like a treasure chest. There were so many things they had collected in all their travels and intended to give as gifts–some even labeled with our names. Mom was a great one for tucking things away, never to surface until now. Also there were things from all those years of life, among them Christmas boxes. One of these I found this summer but determined to leave unopened until Christmastime. I hadn’t envisioned that I would be alone when I opened it to decorate the tree, but that’s how it turned out. A tearful process again.

And yet I felt her with me. The delight she took in handmade, artistic, and just lovely things. This little Anri deer had been collected in Italy and hangs near the chair where I write beside the tree at night. Little things, but they bring joy and remind me the body of Christ is a cloud of witnesses here and before the throne. A chorus of carols proclaim the incarnation, love becoming flesh. In spite of turmoil and distress, our God is awesome and supreme. We are his beloved and He is everything. Wishing you a blessed celebration of his birth and the triumph of his love. Glory and praise!

Christmas Is In the Air by Tara Randel

I can’t believe another year has come and gone. It’s almost Christmas!

2014 has been a productive year, with two Harlequin Heartwarming releases, Magnolia Bride and Honeysuckle Bride. Rival Hearts came out in June. I’m now waiting for the word on proposals I sent to my editor.

I hope 2014 has been an awesome year for you. I pray you have a beautiful Christmas, enjoying precious time with family and friends. Catch up on quality time with those you love, curl up with a good book and a cup of hot cocoa, or keep the season busy with shopping and visiting friends.

When the Most Wonderful Time of the Year Isn’t by Julie Arduini

For me, it was 2004.

I stared at the blinking lights on our Christmas tree, almost in a trance like state. It wasn’t the colors or the tree. I was shell shocked at how fast my life had changed and how much those I loved suffered.

In a year we’d both had job changes. My husband’s job was such a transition we had moved 300 miles away. We knew no one.

We had a toddler recovering from a horrendous first year where we nearly lost her. She needed therapy several times a week on top of medical appointments.

My dad had passed away. When he got the diagnosis he knew the outcome even though for months he didn’t even appear sick. The strapping man who reminded me of John Wayne was gone.

Celebrate Christmas?

I was having trouble finding reasons to get out of bed each morning.

This year has been full of heartbreak for so many I know online and in person. So much transition, sickness and death. Job loss, injustices. Broken marriages. Miscarriages. Widowhood.  These are without looking at headlines. If so, there are families grieving from suicides. Shootings. Life seems full of bad news.

But the song says it’s the most wonderful time. How can that be? How can anyone celebrate the season when there is no feeling? When everything is numb and time feels frozen?

  • I know for me, it helped to decorate. That was my way of not only remembering I had two children who needed the bright lights and Christmas music, it was also a statement. I was down, but I refused to be out. I felt like the devil’s plan was to destroy everything in and around me and if I gave in, he won. And even if it was one small thing I did to remember it was Christmas, I was bound and determined.
  • I also thought of others. It wasn’t easy because I felt so lost inside myself. My favorite thing to do is to have blank cards and point to a random name in the phone book. I write something like, “You mean so much to God that I pointed to a name in a phone book to send a card and the person is you. You are not forgotten. You are loved. Have a Merry Christmas.” I don’t sign my name or leave a return address. I want them blessed, and it takes my mind off my situation to know I’m encouraging someone else.
  • If I couldn’t take the upbeat Christmas music, I put praise music on. If the words, as Christian and Biblical as I needed them to be were heartbreaking to hear, I played instrumental music.
  • I wish I’d been more honest. There were some events I shouldn’t have attended but didn’t want to let anyone down. Other times I isolated myself and should have said something. Keeping it all in wasn’t healthy and again, plays right into the enemy’s hand. You don’t have to air all your laundry, just say you’re struggling and can use prayer. And when someone offers, let them.

Since then I’ve had other difficult Christmas seasons but nothing close to that one in 2004. I think a lot of why I was able to bounce back a little faster was I applied the suggestions above and realized the pain had purpose. Hosea 2:14 has been my lifeline in dark times and I want my adversity to mean something and help someone else down the road.

My prayer is that if you’re struggling this Christmas, something here in this post helped you.

Father, let every person reading this post feel Your presence right now, and in the days and weeks to come. For every event and circumstance that has robbed them of peace and joy, replace it multi fold with blessings we can’t define. Give them special moments that are Your love notes just for them. Give them strength to celebrate Christmas, even if it’s in a different way this year. Draw them close to You. We give you the glory, honor and praise. In Jesus’ name, Amen.

Most of Life is Spent “Old” by Maureen Lang

Last night my husband was looking for a video of our house, because we plan to take up a minor remodeling project and he wanted to “see behind the walls” — the video was taken when our house was just being built.

But the video happened to be on the same tape as some old home videos of our family from over fifteen years ago. So we watched some of it, marveling over our kids and how different life seemed back then.

Afterward, I mentioned that we’re not taking as many videos anymore, and my husband reminded me we were more motivated to record things when the kids were little. They changed so much, seemingly overnight. These days no one is changing much any more.

I agreed, although I did see the subtle changes of age that claimed the best of both of us during the last dozen or more years. When does “old” start? Fifty? Thirty-five? Or even twenty-five, after a final graduation from whatever schooling we take? Or perhaps “old” starts when life begins distributing its disappointments to you or to someone you love. I once heard the definition of old is ten years older than your current age.

Whenever old starts, the sad truth is that most of our life is spent being old — or at least not young, when we possess the freedom that comes with the best health, the most energy, and the sharpest capacity for learning. Maybe that’s the way to stay young, to take care of our health, do all we can to stay energetic, and never ever stop learning.

Here we are in the middle of the Holiest season of the year, the time when we reflect on God Himself taking on human flesh so He could provide a way for us to spend eternity with Him. I shouldn’t be talking about getting old! Perhaps we need a reminder, though, to see how precious the years are, especially when they seem to pass quicker than ever. Am I the only one who feels like last Christmas wasn’t all that long ago? If it seems like this year is evaporating in a flash, especially if you have a number of years behind you, take a moment to praise our God Who is the Creator of time itself!

Dear Hannah–Help Us Spend Our Money!

Dear Hannah,

I recently became engaged to a very wealthy man who is a new Christian. After years of struggling to understand God better and fighting God because of trials in his life, my man knows a lot about the Bible, especially the part about the rich young ruler giving away all his wealth and following Christ. I didn’t fall in love with my man’s money, but I also don’t know if giving all his money way is the best thing for him to do. He has many employees who depend on him for their livelihoods, and if he gives it all away, who’s to say he won’t be giving it to the wrong people? I love the thought of spending a lifetime helping others in real need, but how does one know these days what’s real and what isn’t?

Help?

Wealthy and Confused

Dear Wealthy,

What wonderful news to hear of your fiance’s new life in Christ! And how intriguing to be asked such a question. First of all, I believe Christ’s answer to the rich young ruler was to show not only those listening, but everyone through the ages how devastating the love of money is in our lives. For your fiance to show his willingness to give away his wealth in obedience to the Bible is a great sign that he’s sold out to Christ. If he earned that wealth himself, he understands how to manage money. What he does with that money is not only between him and God now, but it also involves you, so sit down with him and talk this out, and take your time.

I’ve often thought that if I acquired a huge sum of money I would reinvest in a long-term plan of making that money grow so I could give more away as I receive it. I agree with you that giving money to the wrong people could be more harmful than keeping it. For instance, you hand out money to those who don’t know how to manage it and they spend it on something shiny and new instead of paying off their debts. I love the idea of finding a good, solid organization or two that I know handle their finances wisely to help widows and orphans. That is from the Bible. I also believe in investing in missions where people are truly being reached for Christ. If I had a lot of wealth, I would have to place myself on a budget and resist spending indiscriminately. However, your fiance has employees who depend on him. Giving away his wealth would be giving away their livelihood. If he wishes to give it all, he can keep on giving as he receives dividends, paychecks, interest. He can sell extraneous accompaniments to a luxurious lifestyle and live simply, drive a simple car, live like one of us, and manage the funds of his estate in a way that will support those in direst need around the world. I think the act of giving throughout one’s life can grow a person’s character more completely than one single act of giving away everything, but then Christ did tell that rich young ruler to give all away to the poor and follow Him.

I’d love to have our readers consider this. How would you give away a million dollars to help the neediest? What would you do with your wealth? Remember, despite the tanked economy, we’re all still considered wealthy in comparison to the rest of the world. How would you give?

Blessings,

Hannah Alexander

The stories range from serious to funny, sad to joyful, entertaining to insightful – each pointing to the reason for the Christmas season: celebration of Jesus’ birth.

Breezeel, Joann Claypoole, Susan Shelton Dollyhigh, Janice S. Garey, Tommy Scott Gilmore III, Gail Griner Golden, Gigi Graham, Lydia E. Instead of personal compensation, authors requested that all royalties from the sale of Christmas Moments be donated to Samaritan’s Purse, a nondenominational Christian organization providing spiritual and physical aid to hurting people around the world.

The book is a second in a series, the first is Divine Moments published by Grace Publishing of Broken Arrow, Arizona. Available online through barnesandnoble.com, amazon.com, grace-publishing.com, bookstores through Ingram and Spring Arbor Distributors.

I am now accepting articles for Spoken Moments, to be released May 2015 in time for a presentation at the Blue Ridge Mountains Christian Writers Conference at Ridgecrest.

These may be negative words you have spoken to someone, or they spoke to you and how that was overcome. Or they may be positive words you spoke to another, or they spoke to you that changed your life or had an impact. Or they may be stories of how God’s word made a difference in your life.

  • There is no advance. Royalties go to Samaritan’s Purse.
  • Authors get one free copy of the book and a discount on orders.
  • Word length may be 500-2000 or so words, however many it takes to tell the story well.
  • Deadline is end of December.
  • This is limited to the first 50 acceptable stories.
  • Please put “Spoken Moments” in the subject line and send to yvonnelehman3@gmail.com.

My second book being released for Christmas is Crashing into Christmas, published by Lighthouse of the Carolinas, available in paperback and Kindle on Amazon.

Three people are caught up in the rush of hectic Christmas preparations until a car accident brings them together—and changes their perspective on far more than the holidays.

Jacob Delaney finds solace jogging around curves and along nature trails in the western North Carolina mountains until he’s stuck … with no place to run. Jaded Jenny Jameson, unwilling to take part in a Christmas Wish Toy Drive, finds her resolve crumbling when she fears a child may go hungry at Christmas. For Holly Swansen, surviving a near-fatal accident is the least of her concerns. Her life is blanketed by the darkness of scandal that blots out any hope of a Merry Christmas.

As family traditions, a holiday job, and seasonal scandals collide, Crashing Into Christmas explores characters searching for the comfort and joy that only God and this very special season of the year can bring.

MERRY CHRISTMAS!
